The New York Times explains the mystery
...of why Conrad Black was hardly known about in Chicago as of the start of the jury selection for the trial: he hardly ever was there. The article that notes it also contains a note about an inflated-circulation scandal "that was revealed after Mr. Black and his managers were booted from the company."
